Bill Maher Suggests Elon Musk Bring a Chainsaw to a Place He Missed

Bill Maher, known for his bold political commentary on HBO's "Real Time," recently turned his sharp eye toward Elon Musk’s approach to cutting the federal budget. While the two might seem to come from opposite ends of the political spectrum, Maher surprisingly expressed support for Musk’s efforts to reduce federal spending.

However, Maher didn’t mince words when it came to what he saw as a glaring oversight in Musk’s cuts — the military budget. According to Maher, Musk is focusing on the wrong areas, creating an illusion of financial prudence while leaving the biggest offender in terms of government waste untouched: the military-industrial complex.

In a segment that was both serious and satirical, Maher laid out his critique in typical blunt fashion, pointing out that Musk’s attempts to slash spending were commendable in some respects but laughably incomplete. He pointed out that the defense budget, which eats up nearly half of all federal spending, was being left untouched, even as Musk’s "chainsaw" approach to federal waste carved through other programs.

The moment took place before his interview with Rob Schmitt in front of the Republican crowd.

In Maher’s eyes, this was a clear case of cherry-picking, with Musk appearing to be willing to take a hacksaw to civilian programs but leaving the massive military budget almost entirely unscathed.

To make his case, Maher took aim at some absurd examples of wasteful spending within the military. One of the most notable was the existence of 51 Air Force golf courses. These golf courses, Maher pointed out, are just one example of how the military continues to operate in a bubble of extravagance while regular Americans face budget cuts in essential services. The idea that taxpayer dollars are going toward maintaining recreational facilities for military personnel was too much for Maher to stomach.

He sarcastically wondered why Musk, with his keen eye for eliminating unnecessary spending, hadn’t taken the opportunity to "86" these golf courses with his metaphorical chainsaw. The irony, Maher emphasized, is that Musk has been making headlines for trimming the fat in other areas but has completely ignored these lavish perks.

Maher also brought attention to the Marines, who operate no fewer than 10 golf courses of their own. For Maher, this was another example of the military's indulgence in luxuries that ordinary citizens could never imagine.

He suggested that if Musk were truly committed to slashing wasteful spending, he would be targeting these types of military expenses. Instead, Musk’s focus has been on reducing costs in areas like social programs, education, and infrastructure — all of which Maher argues are far less bloated than the military-industrial complex.

Then, Maher turned his attention to Boeing, a major defense contractor that has long enjoyed lucrative government contracts. According to Maher, Boeing recently raised the price of its helicopters by a staggering 177,000%. Yes, you read that right — a 177,000% increase.

And yet, despite this astronomical price hike, the U.S. Department of Defense continued to hand over taxpayer dollars without batting an eye. Maher’s incredulity over this situation was palpable, as he suggested that Musk, who is known for making bold business decisions and pushing for efficiency, would never let such an outrageous price increase slide if it were his own company.

Why then, he asked, has Musk failed to address such blatant corporate greed when it comes to defense spending?

The deeper issue, as Maher saw it, was the ingrained culture of waste that exists within the defense sector. He harkened back to a warning issued by former President Dwight Eisenhower in 1961, when he famously cautioned the American public about the dangers of the military-industrial complex. Eisenhower’s foresight, Maher pointed out, has proven eerily accurate over the decades.

You're gonna need a bigger chainsaw to reduce government debt | Fortune

The defense budget continues to grow unchecked, despite repeated calls for reform. Military contractors and defense agencies seem to operate with impunity, often profiting off of government contracts without any regard for efficiency or cost-effectiveness. Yet, Musk’s focus on reducing the federal budget has, to date, not touched the military’s sacred cows.

The irony of this situation, as Maher emphasized, is that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is another area that Musk could take aim at. Maher’s take on the DHS was not just a critique of wastefulness — it was a hilarious rant that combined both righteous indignation and dark humor.

Maher’s frustration with the bloated bureaucracy of the DHS, which he sees as both ineffective and redundant, was clear. He couldn’t understand why Musk hasn’t turned his attention to this massive department, especially when it continues to absorb taxpayer dollars without delivering the results the American people expect.

Maher’s frustration with the DHS seemed to echo a broader dissatisfaction with the U.S. government’s inability to rein in inefficiency, especially when it comes to defense and security.

For Maher, this was the crux of the issue: Musk’s focus on cutting waste is commendable, but it misses the mark when it comes to the military-industrial complex. The military budget, with its endless pork-barrel projects and inflated contracts, is the true behemoth that needs to be addressed.

Musk’s current approach, while perhaps cutting some of the fat from civilian programs, does little to challenge the entrenched powers that maintain the military’s unchecked spending.

This critique of Musk’s budget cuts is not just a commentary on the specifics of military spending, but a broader reflection on how political leaders and business moguls often overlook the most glaring examples of government waste. Maher’s call for Musk to bring a chainsaw to the defense budget is a metaphor for the kind of bold, disruptive action that Musk has built his reputation on.

If Musk is truly committed to cutting the fat and making the government more efficient, he will need to turn his attention to the bloated military-industrial complex, which remains one of the most significant contributors to the nation’s budget deficit.

Ultimately, Maher’s message is clear: if Musk wants to be taken seriously as a budget-cutter, he needs to address the biggest source of federal waste — the military. Until then, Maher suggests, Musk’s efforts will only serve to create the illusion of fiscal responsibility while leaving the most wasteful and indulgent parts of the federal budget untouched.

It’s a tough pill to swallow for those who believe in Musk’s vision of a more efficient government, but it’s a reality that Maher seems determined to point out. If Musk is serious about slashing the budget, he’ll have to take on the military-industrial complex head-on — chainsaw in hand.
