Meta’s Dirty Secrets Exposed at FTC Antitrust Trial: Groomers Targeting Minors on Instagram

   

Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta Platforms is under intense scrutiny as internal documents surface, revealing disturbing details about Instagram’s role in enabling “groomers” to target minors. This disturbing revelation showed that minors were being targeted at an alarming rate, with 27% of all follow recommendations to groomers being minors. Even worse, 22% of these recommendations resulted in a follow request, giving predators direct access to young users.

In addition to these disturbing statistics, Meta compiled over 3.7 million user reports of inappropriate comments over a three-month span, with one-third of those complaints coming from minors themselves.

A significant portion of the complaints involved adult users targeting younger ones. The documents show that Meta’s own tests found Instagram recommending minors to accounts engaged in “groomer-esque behavior,” yet the company did little to intervene.

This negligence came despite repeated calls for action. In 2017, Systrom directly warned Zuckerberg that Instagram was not doing enough to protect young users. He highlighted several incidents, including a suicide broadcasted on the platform, to emphasize the urgency of the matter. However, Zuckerberg’s response was lukewarm at best, and the issue continued to be ignored, with Meta consistently underfunding Instagram’s safety measures.

Systrom’s frustration with Zuckerberg’s lack of action became increasingly evident in internal emails. In one email from 2017, he expressed his concern that Zuckerberg was viewing Instagram’s success as a “threat” to Facebook and thus downplayed the need for increased resources for safety. Systrom suggested that Zuckerberg was out of touch with the real dangers facing Instagram, especially concerning its younger user base.

Despite these internal concerns, Zuckerberg and Meta continued to push forward with Instagram’s growth without significantly improving its safety infrastructure.

In 2018, Meta executive Guy Rosen warned that Instagram’s younger audience presented a growing risk, yet no substantial actions were taken to address the issue. In 2019, Meta’s own team raised the alarm about the app’s understaffed safety team, further exposing the company’s lack of commitment to user protection.

The company’s spokesperson has claimed that the 2019 report’s references to “groomers” referred to accounts that were removed from Instagram for policy violations and not indicative of the app actively connecting minors with predators.

However, this assertion does little to dispel the reality that Meta failed to act on the warnings it received and that its platform remained vulnerable to exploitation by sexual predators.

The FTC’s antitrust case against Meta also highlights the company’s broader issues with market dominance and its role in stifling competition. The commission argues that Meta’s acquisition of Instagram and WhatsApp was part of a deliberate strategy to eliminate competition and solidify its monopoly over social media.
